Forget Me Not

Today I just have to write about my gratitude to and for my family. Today was a day that I didn't even realize I needed it but was brought to tears several times by the fact that more than one of my family members remembered me. I am so blessed to have a great family, we may have our quirks and our shortcomings, but we are forever a family. Love you all.

A Few Things we have been doing lately

The gift I gave to my friend Alisa who just had a baby boy today.

She has a little girl who is 2 1/2 that I made this skirt for.

We have been using the blocks Bryan's dad made us to build cool things like this castle.

Do you see that yellow table? Yeah, that was my idea and I didn't like it at first but I am glad we painted it now. It adds a splash of color to our boring family room.

How cute is she when she wakes up from a nap? And so happy.

We made Elizabeth a new play area to keep her toys because it was making me crazy to have them all over the living room. Thank you Target for the shelf and bins, and thank you family and friends for her abundance of toys.

Elizabeth loves to sit on the couch by herself lately and read books. I think it makes her feel like a big girl.

That's pretty much it. Elizabeth and I have been accidentally going to story time lately and to the park when it's warm. We just got a ft of snow so we will be headed out soon to make a snowman/woman. More pictures to come.

When I want to quit my job as a parent and go back to my full time job, that was less full time than mothering.
Today I am tired of fighting for naps when my 1 yr old cries whether she is in her bed or out, whether I am holding her or not.
Today I must look at pictures of that happy smiling 1 yr old through the past year so that I remember I really don't want to go back to my full time job, even with all it's vacation time and sick days.
Even though she has the 5th poopy diaper in as many hours I have to remind myself that I love this job I chose, even if I don't love it today.

Just thought I would post in case any of you wondered if my life was just sparkly and perfect....ok, so I know you don't, but really I'm posting because saying these things to my screaming 1 yr old would just be cruel.

If you need me I'll be in the rocking chair upstairs staring down my 1 yr old.

A letter to E

Dear Elizabeth-
You are 13 months this week! I can't believe that you have been in our lives for so long, but couldn't imagine life without you. I wanted to take some time to write a few things about you:
-You LOVE animals. Pictures of them, toy animals, and yes even real ones. Your love used to only extend to dogs, but has recently grown to everything in the animal kingdom. We took you to a petting zoo today and you could not get enough. Grandma Heiner gave you a book all about different animals and you squeal in delight every time you see it.
-You are becoming very independent which for me is both great and hard. A month ago you would have let us feed you and often we did because we didn't like the mess, but some switch went off in your brain recently telling you that you can do it all by yourself. This is everything from feeding to figuring out your toys. I love to watch your brain learn and grow, but it is also hard for me to let go of the 'baby' phase of your life.
-You cannot get enough music. Whether it is on the radio, played by mom or dad, or created by you on the piano, you dance your little heart out and jive with the beat. You also conduct the music at church which always makes the ladies smile.
-You are trying to ditch your naps and just in case you are wondering this is not cool with me. You will go a few days on 1/2 hour naps and then all of a sudden sleep for 14 hours in one night. This wouldn't be problematic if I didn't spend the last two hours of you sleeping checking up on you.
-You love books. You will go to your little corner of the front room and read books and talk to your self and giggle at the sight of every animal, and then scream to make sure that I am still around.
-You are crawling like crazy and have learned to cruise along the furniture and go up and down stairs. Your dad keeps trying to teach you to walk and I keep telling him that it's ok if you don't for a little while.
-You are really helpful. You love to help clean up your toys, but most especially your blocks, Grandpa Heiner made you 100 blocks and I think you would put them all back in their bin one by one. You also love to help cook, and your dad is much better at letting you cook than I am, I promise to work on that in the next few months.
-You are starting to talk/sign more. You now sign drink, more and eat (not all the time, but I'll take what I can get). You will say Mom and Dad and every once in a while woof (sounds more like uf uf uf) because that's what a dog says. You are also getting very good at pointing out facial parts, mostly nose and mouth since Dad and I both wear glasses right now so it's hard for you to point out our eyes.
-Did I mention you have learned how to throw a tantrum? Yeah, that's all I'm gonna say.
-You are also a joy to us and everyone you are around. I can't count how many times people come up to me and say, "Your baby is SOOOOO happy."

Thanks for being a member of our family and for bringing so much joy to our lives. You are challenging, hard, make us crazy and make us cry (ok, most make me cry), but you also bring us indescribable joy, love, lots of happy tears and laughter much more often that the rest. We love you.

Christmas Trip

This picture pretty much sums up our whole trip. Evan playing the part of all of our family, so excited to see Elizabeth and well....you can see where this is going.

We headed to Utah on the 21 so that we would be there in time for Heiner family pictures. On our way we took a detour and went to Arches. The plan was to get out and hike a bit but Elizabeth was sleeping so that didn't happen. Instead we just drove around for a while and took pictures from the car.

This place is gorgeous and we decided we might be going back for a weekend to explore when it is a little warmer.

We mostly forgot to take pictures on this trip. Which is a bummer since we got to snuggle two brand new babies. Our friends Nate and Vicki had a beautiful baby girl and we headed to Logan to meet her the second night in Utah. The same day as the family pictures we did our family Christmas party. Bryan's family has this awesome tradition where the siblings rotate gift giving but the gifts are homemade. All of his siblings are so creative and I love to see all the ideas and love the time we get to spend together. I did get these two pictures of Jill opening the present we made her. Some pillow cases and some slippers. She loved them and I was so relieved.

After our time with the Heiners we headed to other places in Utah and Idaho to visit the Roberts side of the family. It was so nice to spend some time with my siblings and to have a chance to just hang out with each other. I also got to hold my newest nephew Spencer Curtis McCoy. Ooo he is so sweet and I just wanted to eat him up. Then we got to celebrate the last day of 2011 (because we wanted to get some sleep so we didn't stay up until midnight) with some of my family at the Wilding house. It was great.

We were going to head home on Sunday but decided instead to go to Amy's house and spend the day with the kids. Elizabeth had a good time playing with the cousins......but mostly their toys.

Bryan's mom got Elizabeth and Jan these matching dresses and they are ADORABLE, right? So of course we took some pictures of the two of them together.

This one is hands down my favorite. Kelby was making funny faces at them and they were both giggling.

And this was the end.

She was obviously ready for a nap.

And that was the end of our trip. We got home and both breathed a sigh of relief because we could finally put our baby on the floor without hearing screams of bloody murder.

Thanks to everyone for all of the great times, gifts and for letting us stay at your houses. We love you.

Why I love Christmas Cards

Even though they are a pain and a half to put together, label, stamp and send I love Christmas cards. Not mine as much as those I get from everyone else. Here are the reasons why:
1-I get to see your pretty faces and the faces of your funny and cute kids. All the people that we don't get to see throughout the year but think of often and yes, even pray for, we get to see and hear about in a Christmas card. I love to see how much children have grown, and what parents are up to.
2-They remind me of what is really important. Family and friends and our Savior. No one ever talks in their Christmas card about how many times they cleaned their kitchen, or the number of times they vacuumed. How many times did I dust this year? don't know How many times did I kiss my baby's cheeks? About a million, give or take a thousand. Those things that make the Christmas card or letter are those things that really matter. That doesn't mean that I will always include the most important things, but it means that maybe I can stress a little less about how many times I clean my bathroom in a week and a little more about the times I read to Elizabeth, or really talk to Bryan.

Thanks for sending me your Christmas cards, they are one of my favorite parts of Christmas and especially the new year.

The Birthday

Last week Elizabeth had her 1st birthday. Since she wouldn't remember we didn't do a big party, but we did do the cake thing and called our families on Skype for her birthday song and cake. Thanks to Amy & Kelby and family, Gramma Kathee & Poppy, and Mellonee and Daren and Family for participating.

This Saturday was our ward Halloween party. I don't know if yo know this about me but I LOVE HALLOWEEN. Not the gory bloody zombies and creepy things but the fact that we all dress up and it's totally normal. That for once everyone loves pumpkins as much as I do, or at least they pretend to, and we all give candy freely to one another. This year I wanted to do another family theme so we did Mary Poppins, Bert and one of the cute little penguins in the chalk painting. I made Bryan's jacket, hat and bowtie and Elizabeth's costume and then cut off a wedding dress for my costume and added a sash.

We also had a trunk or treat and our cool friends Tanner and Amber were here so they helped us out on that front. Amber decorated the trunk like a creepy swamp creature.

A New High Chair

Elizabeth is too big to use the Bumbo all the time. It was a sad day to realize it since that chair has served us so very well. Then Bryan found a great deal on a high chair at a garage sale and brought it home. This beauty was only $5! It will recline if you want it to, it collapses and you can also change the height. The best part was that the tray is much bigger and has a bigger lip than our bumbo so she can grab stuff more easily.

Our only complaint was the padding, Bryan that it wouldn't dry out so was squishy and probably moldy and mine was the pattern. I really didn't mind until I realize it wasn't drying after the good wash we gave it but then I thought, if I can re-cover it with a fabric I like the why the heck would I leave these elephants and lions on there?

I went down in my fabric stash and picked my two favorite fabrics and then headed to the fabric store for some clear vinyl. Do you know clear vinyl is only $3.99/yd? And if you get it for 30% of it is even cheaper? I was looking all over my house for things to re-cover. I also bought some foam which was pretty cheap and even cheaper when I got to take half of it back.

I ultimately decided on the plain (can I call it that) black and white fabric, mostly because I had more of it and I am kind of in a green phase right now and worried that I wouldn't like it later if it had green in it, but that black and white are always great. Then I cut the other pieces a part and used them as a pattern. Let me tell you what, that foam on the bottom piece was NASTY and it made me so glad I was doing this project.

TA-DA, the finished product. I really love it and I don't hate that it is in my dining room anymore because it is a pattern that I really like.

Elizabeth likes it too because she knows she is eatin' in style.

Castlewood Canyon (with a baby)

Like our last post said, we got Elizabeth a new pack so that she would have a comfy place to ride when we hike. A few weekends ago we went to Castlewood Canyon State Park and hiked around a little bit and used the pack. This is the same place we went last year for puddle jumping and then again later in the year where I saw the snake and had a little panic.

The pack is so cool, it even has a sun/wind shade for her. We also put the camel bag bladder in the pack so we would have something to drink, but Elizabeth drank most of it while we were hiking.

Bryan said that with the pack on I looked like a serious hiker (which I am not) so he told me to pose like I was really hking and Elizabeth followed suit.

DC Trip (LONG post)

This last week, Bryan had a conference in Washington, DC. Since I have always wanted to go to DC and it was going to be much cheaper with his work paying for the hotel for 3 nights Elizabeth and I tagged along.

The family on the plane there. Elizabeth was a champ.

In the airport after our flight waiting for our bags and then a taxi. We ended up waiting for over an hour for a taxi which made all of us a little hungry.

Tara, Brad and their boys were in DC too to visit Brad's brother Ryan so Elizabeth and I got to hang out with them for a few days while Bryan was in his conference. The first day we walked to all of the monuments and then to the Museum of American History.

This is where E spent most of her time on the trip, with Tara's boys eagerly taking turns pushing her. We had to set up a rotation to make sure that everyone had an equal chance.

Notice the crazy hair? Her hair was even curlier than usual in the humidity. I also made her that shirt.

The view of the Washington Monument from the WWII memorial. Because of the recent earthquake the Washington Monument was closed but it was still so cool to be in the skyline that you see pictures of all the time.

The second day I went out with Tara and Brad we got to tour the Capitol Building (thanks Ryan). I didn't get many pictures, but it was pretty cool to see where it all happens.

I tell you what, being on a trip with a baby is hard work, and sometimes you just gotta give in and do things you normally wouldn't. When Bryan saw the picture below he said, "You NEVER would have done that 9 months ago." and he's right.

The first hotel we stayed at was the Gaylord National in National Harbor, Maryland. It was supposed to be a super nice hotel, which if super expensive everything means super nice then ok. But we were a little disappointed in the quality of service and the beds. One thing we weren't disappointed in was the indoor fountain they had that danced to music every night like the one in front of the Bellagio in Vegas.

On Wednesday, Tara and Brad were in Jamestown so Elizabeth and I took the Ferry over to Alexandria, VA and just walked around. I wasn't very well prepared for the trip so I didn't know anywhere cool to go. Instead we got lunch at the delicious pizza place on King Street and then just walked around and looked in the little shop windows for a while.

Wednesday night, Bryan and me and E went on a night tour of DC. We got to see all the monuments at night and all lit up, it was really cool. Our tour guide was really knowledgable and had lots of fun facts about all of the monuments. I also got to experience rain in DC, and WOW it was like someone was dumping buckets of water on you.

This was the point where, after he asked a question our tour guide said, "Wow, not a very intellectual group tonight, huh?" Mostly everyone laughed, but after that people were much more forthcoming with answers.

E was asleep when we went into the memorial but woke up while we were there.

She loves to fly no matter where we are.

Dude, we are totally standing in front of the White House! How cool is that? Bryan didn't think it was that cool, but I did.

On Thursday we went to the Museum of Natural History to meet up with Brad and Tara.

E loved the big rocks and gemstones.

We got lunch at a deli and she wanted to try the pickle.

Next we went to the Air and Space Museum. We listened to a book on tape all about the pilots of WWI when we drove to Oregon, so it was cool to see actual planes from that era. It is amazing to me that they flew planes made out of wood and fabric.

After that we went to the Botanic Gardens to let E roll around in the grass for a little while. It really only was a little while because they were closing. It was so weird because everything closed at 5

Our second hotel was in Arlington so we just used the Metro to get around. We went to see the 911 memorial at the Pentagon using the Metro and got to Arlington National Cemetary that way. I told Bryan that it made me feel so grown up to use the Metro to get around and not have to ask anyone where I was going.

I think that hands down my favorite part of the trip was Arlington National Cemetery. It was sobering to see headstone upon headstone lined up in such a massive expanse of grass. All those men who fought for freedom, not just for America but for so many other countries as well. I gained a much greater appreciation for the country in which I live and the men who fight for me so that I can make the choices that I do. I think it is somewhere that every American should go so that they can truly understand the price of being American and therefore respect the beliefs of others and work harder to constantly make America better.

I cried during the entire changing of the guard ceremony. I think it has something to do with being a mom the idea of being a mother of one of those soldiers and never knowing. I am just thankful to know that our Heavenly Father knows each of these men and cares for all of them.

We also walked up to the home of General Lee and the top of the hill in Arlington. I am reading a book about the Civil War so it was interesting to see the place where he signed his resignation of his position in the Union.

The rest of the pictures are just a few pictures of us on the metro. We went to the Holocaust museum that day, but they don't allow you to take pictures and for good reason. It was not as sad as I thought, but just amazing to see that all an evil person needs is to 1-scare good people and 2- get them to lie down and take it. It really made me ask myself if I am standing up for everything I know is right.

9 Months & Watch Me Grow

Elizabeth is 9 months this week so I wanted to write about what she is up to lately.

-She wakes me up every morning by rattling her binky against the rails of her crib, you know, like prisoners do in movies for food. When she loosens her grip and it slides through the cracks then it's time to really get up.

-She nurses for a while then we get her dressed and feed her a little something. She loves food. There has not been anything we have put in front of her that she has not completely downed. She does have some favorites though, she loves pears, cheese and oatmeal.

-We go on a walk or a run every morning and she LOVES THIS. We walk with our friends Lisa, Lyndsey and her boys Everest and Adler and sometimes Niki and Easton and Demi. Whenever she sees Miss Lisa she squeals, she has loved her from the very beginning. She also loves all other kids, so she is happy to get in the stroller every morning

-She loves to swing in the park. Lately we have been stopping on the way home from running and she will swing for a little while, so I can catch my breath and then we run the rest of the way home.

-When we get home we play for a little while and then she goes down for a nap. This nap used to be 1 1/2-2 hours but all of a sudden she is waking up after 1 hour ready to play. She is always happy so I guess it's ok if she doesn't sleep as long as she stays happy.

-We eat lunch together and then play some more. She is rolling all over the place but not too interested it crawling, which makes my life a lot easier. This week she has started to army crawl and roll a lot more, it has been fun to watch her progress, but scary to have a mobile baby.

-She is happy. Simple and pure she is so happy and such a joy to be around.

-She is still happiest outside. She would stay outside all day if we could. I am sad that the weather is turning colder so we won't be able to be outside as much.

-Every night after dinner she gets in the bath and loves it. She has just discovered the shower head and likes it when we spray her with it. She always tries to grab the water that is pouring out of the cup or the faucet or the shower head. Her baths usually last 1/2 an hour because she loves them so much.

Over Labor Day weekend I ran a marathon relay with a couple of my friends. There were 4 legs that went at follows:

6.75- Heather Bird

8.25- Jessica Chariton

6.75- Niki Sander

4.25- Breea Heiner

Everyone did really great and got good times on their portion of the race. We finished in 4 hours and 23 minutes, which was pretty good, although I ran a little slower than I wanted. It was only my second race experience and I think I might want to do a race a year from now on.

One cool thing that happened that I don't know if it was just this race or if this is always the case was that there were certain checkpoints where they had volunteers holding lists of numbers and peoples' names next to it so they would see your number on your shirt and as you ran by would say, "Great job Breea, keep going". I loved that because it really made me want to run even harder.

One of my dearest friends moved today. She drove to the airport with the kids and her husband drove away with all their stuff. He packed the truck full of the toys that she often let Elizabeth play with. He packed the couches that I spent many hours on, just hanging out and talking. He packed the books that her daughter loved to ask me to read. And he packed the basketball hoop that you could see from the main road and know that they were home and playing.

I've known this was coming for a while, almost a month and a half, but it wasn't real until today. Today when I drove by and the garage door was closed, the basketball hoop gone, and all of the kids missing from the yard. Today when I thought of going on a walk just to say one last goodbye and realized they were already gone. Today when I saw our other friend Lanita and we read each other's thoughts and broke down in tears.

I shed a few tears before, but today I really cried because I am sad to see her go and will miss her and her beautiful family. I know that this will be a great thing for their family, but it wasn't such a great thing for me and that's mostly what I care about today. Maybe next week I will write her an e-mail and tell her how happy I am for her and ask how things are going, but today I might just cry a little more.

I just have to remember how grateful I am for modern technology so we can keep in touch and I can still have a dear friend, just miles and miles and miles away in Indiana.

Dresser Re-do

Bryan had this dresser when we got married that was pretty awful. It was a DI special and had belonged to a little boy (or little girl, I'm not sexist) who REALLY REALLY REALLY love NASA and astronauts and space! There were probably close to 20 space/NASA/astronaut related stickers on the dresser and a few spots where there used to be stickers. Needless to say, it has never been my favorite piece of furniture, but since it would be silly for Bryan to make himself a dresser for Christmas and we are both too cheap to buy a new one we have lived with it.

The other night we were laying on the bed and Bryan said, "That dresser is REALLY ugly. I am thinking about painting it, maybe black"

But with my love of color and our bedspread being green and white, I convinced him to paint it GREEN!

Today is one of those days when I am aching for a sisters day. I am not being greedy, I don't have to have them all, though that would be nice, just one or two for lunch, or to help me pick out fabric to cover some canvases or paint a dresser. I read this quote today in this talk from Elder Ballard and I had one of those flashing neon pointy-finger signs above my head. You saw it too? Oh good. ;)

Really though, I often find myself looking at the clock at 4pm and thinking "Only 3 more hours until bedtime" or even at 8:30am and thinking "Just one more hour until naptime". (Really? because she wakes up at 7, so could it really be that rough?) I think this quote hit me hard because I always want to accomplish something and check it off my list, but spending time with your children and enjoying it isn't something that ever gets checked off, kind of like laundry. Instead I want to cherish Elizabeth a little more this month. I want to be grateful for every moment I get to spend with her, even if sometimes it does involve lots of crying for both of us.

Things I enjoyed about her today:
She got SO excited to see me this morning and flapped her arms like a penguin and I loved it.
She is such a good eater and it is amazing for me to watch her learn new ways of feeding herself.
Elizabeth loves to be held, which can be hard sometimes, but makes me really appreciate this time when she does like me to be around.
She got very excited to read her peek-a-boo book that she got from Gramma today and has started to touch the touch and feel spots like I have showed her.
She sings along with me whenever I sing anything, even if it is just a lip sync.
She is so happy to play outside. She loves to see the plants and animals, to roll around in the grass and try to stuff things in her mouth before I catch her.

When we were in Utah a few weeks ago we went to visit our friends Tanner and Amber and Elizabeth played with the tambourine the whole time we were there.

We went in to check on her one night and this is how she was sleeping.

She LOVES to swing. We go to the park a couple times a week so she can swing.

She also loves other kids, she is watching one now.

She is so close to crawling, I had to help her through this tunnel.

Roadtrip 2011 Part 3- The Cabin

For the last part of our trip we headed to Idaho to visit my family. Every year we go to our cabin in Smiley Creek, ID for a week and stuff as many people as we can into the cabin, then stuff as many days at the beach as we can during the week.

On our way to Oregon we stopped to see my grandma and grandpa but since it was Idaho I put it in with the rest of the trip.

Every year the men go on a hike all by themselves. It usually involves a lot of mapping ahead of time and a lot more hiking than what they thought they saw on the map. On the way home this year Bryan fell in some water and the camera got wet, but luckily it dried out and is working just fine.

We went to the beach a lot while we were there. These are the only three pictures I got because the other days we were still drying out the camera from the hike above. Blake's typical camera face. Bryan tried on this life jacket but I'm not sure it actually fits. Braden played with E for a long time at the beach. He stared to get excited about his newest sibling.

Just a few shots of the cousins at the cabin. Tyler LOVED holding Elizabeth and held her for almost 2 hours while I packed on the last day. He is going to make a great big brother again.

On Thursday we went on a hike all together. Once we got to the lake (or pond) everybody busted out their poles and started fishing. Turns out there aren't actually too many fish in this lake.

All the close-ups I got of people on the hike. This is pretty typical of what E does every time I wear my camelbak.

Roadtrip 2011 Part 2-Oregon with the Heiners

We went to the coast the day after we got to Nicole's. Bryan's mom rented a condo for all of us so we got to live in style right on the beach. It was pretty great especially because the beach by our condo had AWESOME tidepools so we didn't have to go far to see all the beautiful sea life.

The first night at the coast Nicole cooked all of us dinner at the beach whele we played in the water. Let's just say that as usual, Elizabeth was awesome and loved the water and the sand.

The next day after we went crabbing and to the aquariam we went down to the beach to play with the kiddos. Again E loved the sand and Bryan was the nerd that I love and built a dam with a little steam on the beach.

The aquarium was great but most of our pictures didn't turn out.

The last morning we were there we went to the tidepools by our condo and then went inside the Devil's Punchbowl. We saw lots of starfish, a few crabs some sea anemanae (*sp), and a cool thing that Nicole found but I didn't know the name of it.

On our way back to Nicole's we went on a hike to a suspension bridge that was over a waterfall. It was a beautiful hike and I am always amazed at how green Oregon is. Of course we couldn't go to the coast and not stop at the infamous Octopus tree, it just wouldn't be a Heiner trip if we didn't.

Roadtrip 2011 Part 1- The Driving

For almost this entire month we have been traveling for family reunions. We left on July 8 and didn't come back until this week. It was a long trip and we are happy to be home but we had SO much fun together and will probably do something like this every year.

This is The Map. This was the first leg of our journey. We went from our house to Bountiful UT then up to Idaho for a night. Then we drove to Deschutes Campground in Oregon and camped for a night. We wanted to see Mt St Helen's so we drove up there then back to Sherwood before we headed to the coast as a part of Bryan's reunion. We got to Nicole's house in Sherwood, OR on Tuesday July 12.

Note how long Google estimates it would take to drive that far and remember we had a baby too.

Happy Birthday to Me!

My Birthday was great. Bryan took the day off of work (yes he is about to take 2 weeks off for our long trip, but he loves me that much). We went to the outlets in Castle Rock and did a little shopping. Elizabeth got tired of the stroller so decided to ride on my shoulders instead and 'play' with my hair. That didn't go so well.

Our neighbors Mark and Janelle also made an AWESOME cake. It was cherry chocolate with chocolate pudding frosting. Then Mark put the sprinkles in the shape of 24. It was so good we dug right in before we had to get a picture of the whole thing.

It was a great birthday and I am so happy to have so many awesome people in my life who helped make it great.

Tribute to the American Farmer

We spent the night and part of the afternoon yesterday near a little town called Merino, CO. We spent some time with some really hard working people who happen to be small time farmers. In watching their work and effort I remembered to be grateful for all the abundance of food I have on my table.
I often forget where exactly my food comes from (or simply don't know) so this experience was a good reminder of all the work that goes into every locally grown ear of corn, stalk of beans or bunch of spinach. I have taken for granted all of the farmers that work so hard to put food on my table and in my mouth and I don't know that I have ever had to work that hard in my life.
So thank you to everyone who works day in and day out to farm the food that I eat. I will think of you as I eat of that work this holiday weekend and also think of all the soldiers who have given so much for my freedom. May God Bless America!

Exploring Denver: Rocky Mountain National Park

This weekend we decided to do a short road trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. Before heading out I decided I wanted to do some fishing so I got all the gear into the car and bought a Colorado fishing license. Breea gathered all the stuff up for E and packed us some water and snacks to take and off we went. About 10 minutes into our drive the freeway was STOPPED! It made me so angry and I told Breea that I was already wanting to just turn around and go home. Breea on the other hand informed me that "the baby is in the car, I packed all her stuff WE ARE GOING" So off we went, through the traffic jam. We made it to the park around lunch time and had a great time! We drove through the park and enjoyed the scenery, wildlife, rivers and such. We hiked a mile to a waterfall, then I went fishing and caught 1 small greenback cutthroat trout. Apparently because Breea was packing all the baby's stuff I was supposed to grab the video and still camera but I forgot them both. Below are some pictures that we took using my cell phone, not great but they suffice.

Back Yard Camping

Last weekend Breea and I decided to give the camping thing a trial go in our backyard. We had a fire in our neighbors portable fire pit (thanks M & J), roasted hot dogs and ate smores with the Reynolds, and put the baby to bed in the tent. When it came time for us to get in bed Breea and I decided to really 'rough' it and not use an air mattress. Conclusions that we drew from the adventure in the backyard.....
1. E loves the tent.
2. E slept great, which is encouraging
3. No air mattress = no sleep for Breea and I.
4. Our new to us tent did not leak the rain in. Yes it rained during the night and we stayed dry.
5. The hard ground was HARD!

Tuesday our Park Day was at the swimming pool of one of the neighborhoods around here. Elizabeth hadn't been to the pool before so I was excited to take her.

She was happy as usual and she LOVED the water. She also loves being around people so it was the perfect activity. Hopefully we can go lots more this summer and enjoy the beautiful Colorado weather.

I have been having Elizabeth practice sleeping in the pack 'n' play so that she will be ready for our road trip this summer. Yesterday she had a meltdown and I had to snuggle her for her whole nap, I know I have a rough life ;). But today we found our groove.........or she was REALLY tired from getting such crappy naps the rest of the day. Either way, she fell asleep for a nap in the pack 'n' play, which DID NOT happen while we went to Utah and Idaho the last two times.

One thing I haven't mentioned here is that E has been eating solid food (well I don't know if you can call it solid). She has liked pretty much everything we have tried. Even though you wouldn't believe it from the above picture, she isn't usually a messy eater. So far she likes :

Prunes (for help when she is on the go)
And she is fine with rice cereal mixed in with any of the above but not plain.
I have also noticed that now that she has tried a few things she watches me even more intently when I eat and is starting to grab at things on the dinner table. Pretty soon she is just going to want my pizza straight from my plate.

Random thoughts

The other day when I went to the grocery store, I was thinking about when I first started to take Elizabeth out with me. I had just had 3 weeks of someone taking care of me, and helping me and letting me rest whenever I needed to. When I was walking into the grocery store with E for the first time I kept thinking, "Oh, everyone is feeling so sorry for me right now because I have to haul this big carseat everywhere with me." I was then shocked to find that there was not someone there waiting to get my cart for me, I had to do it by myself. Well, for sure someone would be waiting to help my out to my car with my bags and the baby? Wrong, I did it by myself. On to the next grocery store for produce, and again I was disappointed that no one was waiting to help me.

Flash forward to now. I go to the 3 grocery stores every week and some how (yes it is a miracle) manage it all by myself. I am always pleasantly surprised when someone offers me their cart or takes mine so I don't have to sprint to the cart return and back to my baby, but I not longer expect it. I don't notice if anyone is looking at me, and have realized that absolutely no one, especially all the moms of 2+ in the store, is pitying me and my one easy as pie baby.

This along with something someone said on Sunday got me thinking about my capabilities. She said, "If we women didn't do what we do, who would?" Now I am not saying that my husband/men are incapable, or that he wouldn't clean the house or the bathroom. He is an amazing man and does so much for me. However, I realized that I do so many things because they have to be done. I do them by myself, because, yeah, my mom isn't there to hold my hand, and she shouldn't be. I have a lot of things that I don't like to do or don't want to do, but because I am a mother and wife and I am responsible for another human being, I just do what needs to get done.

I am beginning to feel a kinship with the pioneer women because, although my challenges are different, we all do what needs to be done to the best of our ability.

Harvest Mulch...

We re did our flower beds and made some new grow boxes in the back of the house. For some reason the previous homeower put sharp rocks in all the beds which was filling in with dirt and weeds were growing everywhere. I got sick of it so I dug up the rocks, laid new fabric and put red mulch in. I guess the red mulch is supposed to deter bugs also. We'll see how that works. Our neighbors told us our home no longer looks ownerless.

Bryan got the day off of work to spend time in the Temple for Stake Temple Day. Then because I whined about not getting to see him he came home and spent some time with me and Elizabeth in the yard. He had done lots of work this weekend (more pictures to come) but I didn't take pictures of that. Of course these are pictures of Elizabeth's contribution....being cute.

Yesterday was both of our sister's birthday. Bryan's sister Nicole and my sister Tara. Since we couldn't be with them to celebrate, and because we are junk food junkies, I made a cake in their honor. I don't know if either of them like lemon cake with cream cheese frosting and strawberries, but I sure do. YUM.

Easter Trip

Elizabeth and I just spent 6 days in Utah and Idaho. It was great to see the family and to get to spend some time there. The only thing that isn't great is that Elizabeth was sleeping 12 hours a night before we left (7-7) and now she REFUSES to go to bed earlier than 9. Yes, I know I could have it worse, but she was putting herself to sleep and now she needs me to rock her 3 or 4 times before she finally settles down. I think she got creeped out by all the strange people ;).

4 Months!

Our precious Elizabeth May is 4 months old! Bryan and I were just talking about how we know that we had 4 years together without her, but how in 4 months we have started to wonder what that was like.

A Few things about her:

She is sleeping through the night. She goes to bed at 7 and wakes up at 7

She almost always wakes up happy. She giggles when she sees me coming to get her.

She LOVES being outside. Whenever she's grouchy we can take her outside and she calms down right away.

She loves music of any kind. She is fine if it's just me singing or playing on the radio but she loves it.

She has started to grip things; her clothes, some toys, and yes, my hair.

Elizabeth weighs 13.38 lbs and is 23 3/4 inches long. That puts her in the 40th percentile for weight and the 25th for height.

She loves to be outside. She is grouchy around 5:30 every night but if Bryan takes her outside she is happy as a clam.

She is smiling more and more and is such a joy.

She has been sticking her tongue out a lot lately.....

I underestimated how tall she was and made this 'dress' a little too short so it is probably going to turn into a shirt.

Lately we have been wondering how Elizabeth is growing up so fast. It seems like just yesterday she was only 5 lbs and could fit in the palm of my hands. Breea decided to bust out the Bumbo to see how she likes it. Still a little wobbly but seemed to have a good time helping mom with lunch.

This thing is just so much fun, I can't help but smile.
Some other pictures mom took of E just chill'n on the couch. When I get home from work she doesn't want me to hold her, she just wants to sit in the corner of the couch and have anyones attention gooing or gawing at her.
